Switching your number is a two-minute process now, but picking the right network to switch to is harder. Here’s how Jio, Airtel, Vi and BSNL actually stack up in 2026.Speed and 5G: Jio leads, Airtel close behindJio vs Airtel vs Vi vs BSNL 2026 – Jio has the clearest 5G lead by scale, with 285 million 5G users and 5G traffic running at about 1.5 times its 4G traffic. Opensignal’s recent Mobile Network Experience report names Jio India’s best network, delivering nearly double Airtel’s download speed. On uploads, the gap narrows: Jio averages 22.18 Mbps and Airtel 21.00 Mbps, both well ahead of Vi’s 13.00 Mbps and BSNL’s 6.35 Mbps. This guide uses Opensignal’s February 2026 India report, which analyses real-world usage on users’ phones between 1 October and 29 December 2025. After the comparison, you’ll find a checklist and a step-by-step guide to porting. One caveat: these are national averages, so your own street can look different. The short answerMetric (Opensignal, Oct–Dec 2025)JioAirtelViBSNLDownload speed (Mbps)107.358.225.19.0Upload speed (Mbps)8.08.45.92.5Time connected to a network99.4%98.9%96.2%85.6%5G availability69.2%67.4%32.0%not ranked5G download speed (Mbps)198.9185.9134.8not rankedReliability (100–1000)864814766461Consistent quality68.9%62.7%56.2%21.4%Video experience (0–100)65.064.962.046.3Gaming experience (0–100)65.970.669.956.0Voice-app experience (0–100)78.279.579.274.0Jio won the most awards overall, with nine wins (one of them shared). Airtel leads on gaming, voice apps and upload speed. Vi won three of the five 5G experience awards, though its 5G footprint is much smaller.Airtel isn’t far behind on real-world experience, though. It’s frequently rated higher on voice call quality and indoor coverage, and some comparisons give it the edge for consistency in urban and semi-urban areas. Airtel’s 5G Plus network now covers over 600 cities, against Jio’s 700+.Vi: the comeback storyVi was the slowest to launch 5G, but it’s catching up. Its 5G network is now live in more than 200 cities across all 17 circles where it holds 5G spectrum, and it recently won three of five 5G Experience awards: video, gaming and voice-app experience. If Vi has decent coverage where you live, it’s become a genuinely competitive option rather than a fallback.BSNL: the budget anchorBSNL can’t compete on speed, but it doesn’t try to. It remains the cheapest network for long-validity plans, and it’s gaining users specifically because of price hikes from the three private operators. Its network has also expanded, now covering over 487,000 towns and villages through 209,000+ sites. What the numbers mean in daily useSpeed. Jio’s download speed is nearly double Airtel’s. Even so, Opensignal rates the video experience on Jio and Airtel as practically tied. Both fall in the “Good” band, which means HD streaming with little buffering. Past a certain point, extra Mbps matter less than reliability.Reliability and coverage. Jio and Airtel are close, at 99.4% and 98.9% of time connected. BSNL users, by contrast, had no connection about 14% of the time.5G. Jio and Airtel have comparable 5G availability, at roughly two-thirds of the time. Vi’s is about a third because its rollout is still growing, but where its 5G is live it did very well on video, gaming and voice-app quality.Operator by operatorJio is the strongest all-rounder for speed, coverage and consistency. Its weaker spots are gaming and voice-app scores, which trail Airtel and Vi.Airtel is the pick for gaming, calls over WhatsApp and similar apps, and uploads. It has the best 5G upload speed, at 19.3 Mbps. Its download speed is lower than Jio’s.Vi is the one to check carefully. Its overall coverage score is low (4.1 out of 10), but its 5G quality is strong where it’s available. It’s worth trying only if you’ve confirmed good signal at your home and workplace.BSNL is the budget option, but expect low speeds (9 Mbps average) and patchier coverage. Opensignal notes it is bringing nearly 98,000 4G sites online that can be upgraded to 5G, so the picture may improve.Who should port whereHeavy streamers and everyday all-rounders: Jio, for the strongest speed and consistency.Gamers, frequent callers on WhatsApp, and people who upload a lot: Airtel.People in a city where Vi’s 5G is live: Vi is worth a trial if the price suits you.Light users who mainly need a low-cost number: BSNL, if your area has decent coverage. How to port your numberCheck eligibility. Your number generally needs to be active on its current network for at least 90 days, with no pending ownership change and no dues (especially on postpaid).Get your porting code. Send an SMS from the number you want to port: PORT <your 10-digit number> to 1900. You’ll receive a Unique Porting Code (UPC) by SMS. It’s valid for only a few days, so apply promptly.Apply with the new operator. Give them the UPC and complete your KYC. You’ll get a new SIM.Wait for the switch. The new operator will tell you the date and time. Porting usually takes a few working days, a little longer if you’re moving to a different circle. Keep your old SIM active until you’re notified, then swap SIMs.The rules are set by TRAI. See its customer guide for the official process. Before you switchTest the new network’s signal where you actually spend time: home, office and your regular commute. A friend’s SIM works well for this.Compare plans using the table above, not headline prices.Opensignal’s report includes state-by-state results, which you can use to see how each operator performs in your region.Consider keeping your old SIM as a secondary if you’re unsure. My own experience: switching from Airtel to ViI recently moved my number from Airtel to Vi, and the process was simpler than I expected. I went to a Vi showroom to start the switch, so everything was handled in person. The one thing to plan for is your final charges with the old operator. It took about a day to clear my outstanding Airtel charges before the move to Vi could go ahead. Even after that, a small amount showed up again, because Airtel takes a few days to fully close the account. I had to pay that leftover amount a few days later, so keep an eye on your old operator’s bill for a week or so after switching. If you’re planning to port, my advice is:Settle your current charges before you start.Expect a small final bill from your old operator, and don’t ignore it.Keep your old SIM active until the new one is confirmed.Overall it was a straightforward process, and the paperwork was handled at the showroom.Final verdictJio vs Airtel vs Vi vs BSNL 2026 – There’s no single best network in 2026, only a best network for your area and your usage. Jio wins on raw 5G scale, Airtel on consistency, Vi on improving value, and BSNL on price. Test coverage at your address before you commit.SourcesOpensignal, India Mobile Network Experience Report, February 2026 (data collected 1 Oct–29 Dec 2025)TRAI, Customer guide to Mobile Number PortabilityOperatorLinksAirtel https://www.airtel.in/recharge-onlineJio https://www.jio.com/selfcare/rechargeBSNL BSNL Self Care PortalVi Online Mobile Recharge – Best Prepaid Plans & Top-Ups | Vi IndiaBest Mobile Data Plans for Heavy Users in India – Rechargers.inBest Prepaid Recharge Plans January 2026: Full Roundup Post navigationiPhone Duo India Price: Unconditional Proof Apple’s Sensational Foldable iPhone Skyrockets Beyond Imagination
